An Open Letter To: @MsYummyJunk

So I want one of my followers to write me a poem or a letter.....The Choice is yours (Captain Planet Voice) lol

Dear Ms. Yummy Junk,

No postage stamp necessary!

That's how this all began. I don't remember...ever having a twitter conversation with you prior to that tweet that you wrote. I just happened to come across that tweet...requesting that you wanted one of your followers on TWITTER...to write you a letter or a poem. Even though I enjoy writing poetry...I felt compelled to write you a letter...since I had recently had a twitter conversation about how many of us don't communicate our thoughts through letters anymore. I also told the person that I was tweeting at the time that the only thing that you will find in my mail box is bills and spam...so why not make a name change. Instead of calling it a "Mailbox"...we should call it "You Won't Find Mail Here"

Let me make myself perfectly clear...even though I felt compelled to write a letter to you...I found myself thinking that I should watch the movie..."Dear John" before I even attempt to express my thoughts to you. After all...it was this movie that compelled you to request a letter from one of your followers in the first place. So I thought...what better place to start than at the beginning.

The main character in the movie "DEAR JOHN"...was in the Army. I also served in the United States Army. This particular character...through his letters...expressed his feelings to the woman that he loved. Which I could understand...because I lived for a letter from a loved one...being that I was a prior-service military person myself. One of the best feelings that you can get while being deployed...is letters from your loved ones and a box that was wrapped in brown paper and string. That is what we call a "CARE PACKAGE"

The letters...directly touched my "SOUL" because they were all written from the heart of the people that I loved the most. They hold sentimental value that is worth more than their weight in gold. A "CARE PACKAGE" touched us in a different way. For instance...Mama would bake your favorite cake, cookies, and cook your favorite meal...and there would be enough to share with many of the other soldiers. Many of them that have now became your "BROTHERS FROM ANOTHER MOTHER"

A lot of my friends...from home...would send a "CARE PACKAGE" filled with "White castle, Mcdonalds, or even Wendy's. White Castle's fish fillets were my favorite at the time. I love my friends from home...they were precious many were like family members. That's what happens when you grow close to a lot of people from your neighborhood. They would take the time out of their personal life to send me pictures, newspapers, cd's, nasty magazines and anything that they could get their hands on. It was their own personal way...to show "ME"...that they cared about me and praying for my safe return back home.

Their letters to me...would always keep me up to date with what was going on in "Brooklyn."...as well as wanting to know what I was going through. You see Ms. Yummy Junk...99.9% of the friends that wrote me letters were from female friends or female family members that cared enough about me to write a letter...or send me a "CARE PACKAGE". You see brothers only have time for...maybe "ONE" letter at most...because "BROTHER'S IN THE HOOD" don't have time to write letters...their time is consumed with other activities. Many of the letters...after I had read them...I would tie them all up together and keep them in a safe place. Sometimes I would read certain letters...over...and over...and over again! I found strength in a lot of those letters. They were filled with..."LOVE".

But in reality...anything that was sent to me was something much more than that...it was a connection to home and a connection to the person's heart...and that Ms. Yummy Junk...is "PRICELESS"

Because sooner or later...the letters and the "CARE PACKAGES" don't come as often. That's why they say that you'll know who your real friends are. They'll be there for you...no matter what. They will never stop loving you and they have the power to make whatever I am going through at the time...bearable. You see I had the "Good..The Bad...and the Ugly throughout my military career. Some places where I was stationed...felt like I was in "HEAVEN"...like Germany for example. There's something special about the people, food and the German culture...that can be very enjoyable to a person that is what seems like a million miles from home.

Which brings me to the other end on the sword...because for every place that seemed like "HEAVEN"...there was a lot of other places that felt like "HELL"...and that I was under the direct command of the "Klu Klux Klan"...Ft. Riley Kansas, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri...and at the top of the hell hole...there wasn't no place better for me to feel miserable than in Fort Irwin in Barstow, California. Only because of the desert heat that we had to experience...while accomplishing certain tasks. The temperature would get well over 100 degrees in December...but the people of Barstow are a blessing. They made life in the desert enjoyable...whenever we had some time to ourselves...although it was very difficult place to be stationed.

Well Ms. Yummy Junk... while watching "Dear John"...I thought to myself...I can't write you a letter. I just can't do it. The reason for this is that...I had no idea that the movie at one point focused on the events of September 11th...that struck home. It hit a nerve Ms. Yummy Junk. It was like pouring salt on an open wound in my body. You see Ms. Yummy Junk...I live in New York City and I witnessed that traumatic event...first hand. Its a hurtful feeling that will last forever. It affected me for so many reasons that I can't even begin to explain. Tears were shed and I thought to myself...there's no way that I can write a letter to you.

But for some strange reason...I found myself drawn once again to write you on Memorial Day. It seemed fitting that I would be able to express my thoughts on the day that we pay respect to our "FALLEN SOLDIER'S"...because there are so many that have not made it back home. Ms. Yummy Junk...there's a high price that we pay when we become soldiers. Many of us know that we may lose our lives...but many of us never think that through this... one of our most difficult times that we will face...we never think that we may lose what we hold close to our hearts. Many of us are prepared to lose our lives for our "COUNTRY"...but we aren't prepared to lose someone that has captured our heart.

In the military...we are always teased about "JODIE" getting your girl...while you are gone. As much as I love to receive a letter from a love one...I am thankful that I was never on the end of a "DEAR JOHN" letter. I think I deserve better than that and I would like to think that many that served for our country during troubled times...deserve that same respect as well...but you know what they say about absence!

It will make the heart grow fonder...or it can make the heart wonder!

P.S. Some people can't express themselves through oral conversation. Some people can't express themselves in writing. Its a great thing when you can come on TWITTER and ask one of your followers to write you a letter...or poem. You just gave humanity hope...because a letter is another way of expressing your thoughts to another human being. I hope that you enjoyed my thoughts about the movie...DEAR JOHN...and my thoughts of a simple things that's called a letter.

P.S. P.S. You won't find a P.S. on TWITTER...or anywhere else but inside of a letter! Happy Memorial Day to you...your friends...and your family! I leave you with the tweets that made this letter possible. Enjoy!
